Got dull boring fans? Want to make those little matte black air pushing rotary oscillators look the best they can be? Or do they just need an oil because of their long lives of spinning has caused them to become stiff? Well then this is for you!!!
First of all you’re going to need:
*fans....der
*tweezers
*spray paint (if you’re painting)
*grease (if you’re greasing)
*tissues
*patience
*high grit sand paper (400ish)
Ok now first of for both of these jobs you’re going to need to disassemble the fan. This may look like a daunting task but it’s really quite easy, first pull the sticker off the back of your fan. Under it should either be a small "tunnel" or there will be a cap covering the hole.....if there’s a cap takes it out (no der).
next get your tweezers, now this is the hardest bit off all, you’re going to need to find the small washer that holds the "axel" of the fan to the chassis, you’re going to have to remove it, if you break it you have F!$#%D up your fan. So yeah, don’t break it. (Also try not to wash the grease off it.
Now if you’re just greasing your fans simply apply some Vaseline of WD40 and put it back together, but if you’re in for the long haul this is what you need to do.
Now that the assembly is apart you’re going to want to clean it thoroughly, get rid of all that built up dust and grime. After you’ve got your fan sparkling like new you need to “prime" it. all this involves is getting some high grit sand paper and start rubbing down all the blades, front back and avoid damaging the edges, remember where not trying to destroy the thing, just rough it up a bit so that the paint sticks better.
Ok your fans are primed (you can also youse a special spray for this, but i prefer sand paper) you'll want to do your first coat of paint, first stuff the inside of the fitting with tissue's so that you don’t go painting the magnets. next simply paint, i find it best to place the can around 15 cm away and have a sweeping motion all the way down (the can should have instructions) also try to use automotive paint, it’s the best for the job.
After several coats (with adequate drying time between) you should have a nicely painted fan (fans), for an added effect try using stencils (e.g. spirals or lines going across each blade), as well as this you can also use UV reactive paint, if you have UV cathodes just imagine how that would look. If you can’t find UV reactive paint or you only want some sections of your fan UV reactive you can also use UV reactive nail polish. Now it may seem a little strange asking your sister "hey do you know where I can get UV reactive nail polish", but trust me it gives an amazing effect.
placing a coat of a different colour paint over the top of your base and then placing it near a heater (or other heat source) will cause the top layer to shrink, this also gives a cool "splatter like" effect, remember to go over it with clear nail polish though cause it tends to flake off.
that pretty much sums it up for fan pimping, apart from putting your own LED's in the corners that about it. (if you want to do this its relatively easy, just drill some holes, jam in your led's with a hot glue gun, wire them up in a circuit and wire them to a Molex. some may be rated to other voltages other than 5, 7 or 12 so then it will take a resistor and some other work, but yea Google is your friend).
Hope this helped, oh and i take no responsibility for others stupidity.
